| Samuel Edward Oldfield
carried out the business of hatter and hairdresser just around the
corner from High Street at 31 Moorgate Street (Kelly’s Directory
of West Riding, Yorkshire, 1881; page 952) in Rotherham. |

As compliment to Mr. Oldfield,
Alderman George Gummer wrote in Reminiscences of Rotherham that
“I doubt if any tradesman was respected more than Sammy.” |
| Born in 1820 in Marlborough,
Wiltshire, Samuel married Elizabeth Adams in Sheffield in 1842.
They lived in a home on Clifton Mt. in Rotherham and together they
raised and provided for eight children: George, Frederick, Betsy,
Emily Rose, Arthur, Frances, Walter, and Lucy. George was best known
for his horsemanship, sporting habits, and notable pranks; Frederick
stuck close to his work as hatter and hairdresser; Arthur and Walter
became butchers by trade; and Betsy was a milliner.

| After suffering
a long and severe affliction, Samuel died at age 70 on 7th September
1886. Elizabeth died at age 87 on January 14, 1903. They are buried
together at Moorgate Cemetery, under one lovely headstone with their
daughter Betsy and with Elizabeth’s sister Sarah Ann Adams. |
